The Biltmore Estate in Ashville North Carolina Located about 1-1/2 hour away from Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg and will allow you to step back in time more than 100 years to see the 250 room Vanderbilt home located on the most amazing grounds in the Smoky Mountains - 8,000 acres worth!

Besides the stunning landscaping, flowers and trees in the gardens enjoy the beautiful interiors of this luxurious estate where you will find masterpieces by Renoir and tapestries from the 16th century along with other treasures throughout the Biltmore Estate.
There is also a working farm on the estate: The River Bend Farm with blacksmith and woodworkers still performing their crafts in order to keep the farm running.
The River Bend Farm not only grows vegetables, fruits and herbs which end up gracing the tables of the estate restaurants, there is livestock: horses, sheep and cows. Time it right and there are lambs and calves on the farm and according to the Biltmore Estate "cuddling is encouraged".
On the estate you will also find fine dining, exquisite shopping and the opportunity to sample fine wine from the Biltmore Winery.
Besides the tours, gardens, fine foods and shops there are often events happening at the Biltmore Estate such as concerts and special seasonal celebrations for Christmas and Thanksgiving.
The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad Located in Bryson City North Carolina within 90 minutes drive time form Pigeon Forge you can take various tours throughout the year in classic railroad cars that were the primary form of transportation for passengers in the Great Smoky Mountains.
The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad has been a popular attraction has been a popular attraction with tourists as well as locals for years.
The best times of the year to ride on the railroad is when the fall colors kick in during October and early November and December when children can take advantage of their special Polar Express Ride when young children ride the train at night - often in pajamas and enjoy Christmas lights, hot Coco, listen to Christmas music and even get to met Mr. Christmas himself Santa Claus!
The Polar Express ride is an attempt to recreate the Christmas movie and by all accounts any young child who has taken this special ride on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad has thoroughly enjoyed it making it a lifelong cherished memory.
The Polar Express Christmas fantasy train ride itself is approximately 90 minutes long and is only available from November 7th until December 23rd. The price for tickets on the polar Express is $38 for adults, children ages 2 through 12 are $26 and children under 2 are free.
This Polar Express excursion is the only Great Smoky Mountains railroad Tour we recommend for young children.
The Great Smoky Mountains railroad has other excursions including the Nantahala Gorge that is best in the fall taking approximately 4-1/2 hours including a 1 hour layover in the Nantahala North Carolina.
The Nantahala Rail Road tour will take you from Bryson City on the old rail line to Lake Fontana where you will cross the old railroad bridge and on to the Nantahala Gorge.
Cost of tickets to the Nantahala Rail Road on the Great Smoky Mountains railroad range from $34 - $53 for Adults based upon the season. Children's tickets range from $19 -$31 but we do not recommend this train tour for children.
Food is available to be purchased on the train or at the Nantahala Outdoor Center. Tickets for any of the train rides entitle you to free entrance to the Model Train Museum in Bryson City.
The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad is not handicapped friendly and persons confined to a wheelchair should consider an alternate activity.
